A Guide to the Sharjah Economic Excellence Award Categories: Which One Fits Your Business?

Published 25 September 2026 · 8 min read

Eight categories, each with its own conditions and criteria — and the award does not allow entering two at once. This guide sorts the categories by who they suit and explains how to choose the one where your evidence is strongest.

Key takeaways

  • Three categories for establishments by scope: Sharjah, any emirate (for SMEs), or the GCC.
  • Two categories for individuals: entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs of determination, on the same five criteria.
  • Three themed categories — localisation, social responsibility and security standards — for those with a clear strength in one area.

The Sharjah Economic Excellence Award, organised by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is not one award but eight under one umbrella. The commonest mistake we see is not in the file itself but before it: an establishment entering a category that does not fit, or hesitating between two until the time runs out. Since the award does not allow entering two categories in the same cycle, choosing the category is a decision worth taking first and with care.

First: the categories for establishments

  • Sharjah Excellence Award: the main category, for small, medium and large establishments (9 employees or more) operating in the emirate of Sharjah for more than three years.
  • Sharjah SME Award: for innovative enterprises in trade, industry and services in any UAE emirate, from one to 249 employees, established for more than two years.
  • Sharjah Gulf Excellence Award: for establishments registered in any GCC state, with the same size bands, after at least three years in operation.

The common grey area is a Sharjah establishment with between 9 and 249 employees: by size it may enter both the Sharjah Excellence Award and the SME award, but it must choose one. The difference is that the SME category assesses the innovation in the enterprise and its results in the market on five defined criteria, while the main category assesses overall organisational maturity. Those with an innovative product or method and clear results lean to the first; those who have built a complete management system lean to the second.

Second: the categories for individuals

The Sharjah Entrepreneurs Award and the Sharjah Entrepreneurs with Disability Award are granted to the owner, not the enterprise. The applicant must be an owner or founder and the decision-maker, with an enterprise operating in any UAE emirate for more than two years. The five criteria are the same in both: personal qualities, strategic orientation, professionalism, innovation and business results. The practical difference is that the nomination file here is a personal one — a professional history, an achievements summary and future plans, within a page limit.

Third: the themed categories

  • Sharjah Gulf Localisation Award: for Gulf establishments that most employ and develop nationals and GCC citizens, on three criteria — attraction, particularly into senior positions, development and retention.
  • Sharjah Social Responsibility Award: for public- and private-sector establishments in Sharjah, on four pillars — community, environment, workplace and stakeholder relations — with at most three projects per file.
  • Sharjah Best Security Standards Award: in partnership with Sharjah Police, for all establishments in the emirate, on the pillars of security and safety, economic sustainability and social responsibility.

A working rule: a themed category suits you when your strength in its area is clear and measured over three years. If your strength is spread across many areas with none standing out, the main category or the SME category fits better.

The common conditions that disqualify many files

  • A valid licence with chamber membership or a free-zone licence, and sound financial and legal standing.
  • A minimum period in operation that differs by category: more than two years in some, three in others.
  • A winner may not re-enter the same category for two cycles.
  • Audited financial statements for three years in the localisation category.

How to choose in three minutes

On the award page we have placed a small tool that asks four questions — who is applying, where the business operates, how many employees, and whether you have a particular strength — and then shows the closest category and the others open to you under the published conditions. Once the category is chosen, the real work begins: measuring where you stand against its criteria and building the missing evidence before the submission date.
